4: CHAMBER HOSTS JUNE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce will host its June Business After Hours (BAH)
from 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 10th, at Country Side Living, located
right behind Roth’s Family Market at 1605 E Lincoln.
Country
Side Living is a locally owned Residential Care facility specializing
in the care of those with Alzheimer’s or other Dementias. The facility
has room for 16 residents, creating a “feels like home” environment.
Kind and compassionate caregivers staff the facility and continually
update their skills through monthly classes to provide even better care
for the residents. Residents are encouraged to be involved in the everyday
life of the facility, whether it be folding laundry, gardening, playing
cards or simply having coffee with staff. Homemade breads and cookies

2 , 2004: BOARD TO MARKET MEMBER BENEFITS
The Chamber
Board, in conjunction with the Marketing Committee, has created a partnership
with the Woodburn Independent to initiate a “Benefits of Chamber Membership”
campaign.
The Board
is looking for business examples of how Chamber membership has benefited
you and your business. We are asking you to jot these down and then
either fax or email them back to the Chamber office.
Quotes
will be chosen and published in an “ad” format complete with an “action”
photo taken at your business. The Chamber gets to advertise how important
Chamber membership can be, and in return, the business gets a great
advertising opportunity at no cost.
So, how
has Chamber membership benefited your business? What do you gain from

2 , 2004: CHAMBER TO HOST TULIP PRINT CONTEST
The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for artists to create a limited
edition print to identify and promote the 2004 Woodburn Tulip Festival.
The poster should create awareness of and create interest in the festival,
attracting a clientele interested in a high quality, professional and
an “artful" remembrance of this year's festival. Subject matter
should involve tulips.
Rules & Specifications:
- All
artwork submitted must be original artwork.
- All
artwork becomes the property of the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce.
- The
use of tulips is highly recommended. Artwork may be line art or photo.
The entry will be disqualified if copyrighted materials are used
- Verbiage
must read "Woodburn Tulip Festival"
- Verbiage
must include the annual year some where in the design. This is our
"3rd Annual" year.
- Verbiage
must include the city name and must be spelled correctly, (i.e.) "Woodburn,
Oregon".
- The
dates for this year are March 20 - April 20, 2004.
- Final
print size will be 16x20in.
- Design
must be in 2400dpi CMYK format.
- Designs

30, 2004: Oregon OSHA offers free program for small-business owners
Woodburn
- Oregon OSHA and the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce will introduce
a safety and health program to the Woodburn business community through
two brown bag lunch workshops to be held in February.
The Public
Education Section of Oregon OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Division)
designed the Safety for Small Business program to help small business
owners get started in implementing safety and health programs in their
workplaces. The program consists of two one-hour workshops spaced two
weeks apart.
Attendees
will learn how to implement a safety and health program into their business
plan and be introduced to the programs’ ten safety and health training
modules. Each attendee will receive: * The program overview * Instructor’s
Manual * Employee Training Manual * 10 abbreviated training modules
* A guide to written requirements * 16 master forms suitable for copy.

The workshops
will be facilitated by Mel Wattula, a Training Specialist with Oregon
OSHA. Mel studied Secondary Education and has an Associates Degree in
Forestry. His work experience includes more than 33 years in underground
mining. Mel has extensive experience as a manager responsible for Safety,
Health, Training and Security. He has also worked in residential and
industrial construction and logging.
Every employer
takes risks in product development, marketing, advertising, and business
expansion, in order to compete, but no one wants to risk an employee
getting hurt at work. This program is for employers who want to reduce
the risks and ultimately the costs associated with workplace injuries,
illnesses, and fatalities.

2003 Distinguished Service Awards (DSA), hosted by the Woodburn Area
Chamber of Commerce, will be available beginning Tuesday, January 20th.
They can be picked up at event sponsor Mid-Valley Bank’s two Woodburn
branches, the Chamber of Commerce office or downloaded from the Chamber

14, 2004: PRESS RELEASE: CHAMBER TO HOST 50TH DSA AWARDS DINNER
The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 2003 Distinguished Service Awards
(DSA) Dinner on Friday, March 12th. This year’s event, sponsored by
Mid-Valley Bank, will be held at Country Meadows Village, who will have
the honor of being the site for the golden 50th anniversary of this
premier Woodburn community event.
The theme
for the dinner will be “Oscar Nite at the DSA,” emphasizing gold for
the 50th anniversary as in the “golden age of the movies” and the gold
Oscar awards etc. This should provide the perfect background for the
elegant and prestigious affair the DSA has grown to become after 50
years.
Bi-lingual
award nomination forms will be available for pickup on Tuesday, January
20th, and can be picked up at the Chamber office, Mid-Valley Bank or

The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Forum Luncheon, sponsored
by Les Schwab Tire Center, on Wednesday, November 19th, at the Tukwila
Center for Health & Medicine, from noon - 1:15 p.m. The featured
speaker will be State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Susan Castillo.
Susan Castillo
was elected Superintendent in May 2002, and sworn in to office on January
6, 2002, to a four-year term. As Superintendent, she oversees more than
half of a million students in over one thousand schools from kindergarten
to senior year. Her goal is to develop a solid and sustainable program
for funding schools, close the achievement gap between students, and
improve efficiency at the Department of Education.
Susan received
a Bachelor of Arts in Communications form Oregon State University. As
the first Hispanic woman in the Oregon Legislative Assembly, she served
in the Oregon State Senate from 1997-2002. Susan’s leadership in the
state legislature includes serving as Vice-Chair of the Senate Education
Committee. She was also elected an Assistant Democratic Leader for the
1999 and 2001 legislative sessions. As a champion for Oregon’s public
schools, she worked to foster innovation in public schools, and remove
barriers to achievement.
In addition
to her duties as an elected official, Susan is a fellow in the American
Leadership Forum, which is dedicated to bringing leaders together to
strengthen skills and better serve the public good. She is a board member
of Birth to Three, a nationally recognized non-profit parenting education
and support program dedicated to strengthening families. Prior to entering
public office, she enjoyed a long career as an award-winning television
journalist for KVAL-TV in Eugene, Oregon, where she currently lives
with her husband Paul Machu.

The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that internationally known
speaker Johnny Lake will be the keynote speaker at the 2003 Crystal
Apple Awards, sponsored by West Coast Bank. Mr. Lake is the owner of
Positive Images Consulting, Providing Effective Leadership for the 21st
Century.
The mission
of Positive Images is to prepare people for their roles in society by
providing them with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow
them to participate and function in a multicultural society, to communicate
across cultures, and to be successful in their personal, social and
civic interactions. A strong sense of fairness, equity, liberty and
justice for all must be shared. This is the best investment we can make
for a better twenty-first century.
Mr. Lake
is a popular international keynote and public speaker working with both
youth and adults. He is an advocate for the needs of at-risk youth and
is a nationally certified trainer in programs respecting leadership,
diversity, community-building, cross-cultural interactions skills, as
well as equity and ethics for youth and adults.
Mr. Lake
is a highly recognized writer and storyteller. He is active in community
outreach and works with businesses, state agencies, police departments,
churches, schools and organizations. A graduate of Willamette University,
Mr. Lake has taught at Willamette University and currently teaches at
the University of Oregon and at Portland State University on issues
of leadership, diversity and multicultural education. He is Chairman
for the State of Oregon Commission on Black Affairs and also is Education
Chair for the NAACP.
The Crystal
Apple Awards Dinner will honor 54 nominees who provide excellence in
education for the Woodburn community in three areas: administration,
teaching and support staff. Of those nominees, twelve will receive the
Crystal Apple award. The event will be held on Friday, November
14th, at the Wittenberg Inn, located on River Rd. in Keizer.

The Woodburn
Area Chamber of Commerce was recently recognized as a “Quality of Life
Honoree” for its successful efforts with its Leadership Youth program.
This recognition came at the annual award’s celebration of Today’s Choices:
Tomorrow’s Community, a regional non-profit serving Marion and Polk
counties.
Each year
Today’s Choices seeks out efforts by businesses and organizations that
are designed to improve the quality of life in a community. This year
the Woodburn Chamber was one of 26 projects identified for recognition
during a dessert buffet presentation at the beautiful, new Chemeketa
Community College Viticulture Center, located in West Salem.
Today’s
Choices: Tomorrow’s Community is an organization made up of business,
education and community leaders committed to creating meaningful change
by preserving what is best about our collective past as creative solutions
are sought to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Members share a common commitment
to children and families, quality education, responsive leadership and
an atmosphere where honesty, responsibility and respect are commonplace.

will host a Public Dialogue on Friday, November 7th,
at 7:30 A.M. The topic for discussion will be “Sector Awareness, Understanding
the Neighbors in my Community. The meeting will be held at the new Chemeketa
Woodburn Campus, 120 E Lincoln St.
The forum
is open to the public and will provide an opportunity to hear from differing
sectors of the community as they come together to gain understanding
of one another and learn about the challenges we all face. The forum
will also focus on how the differing sectors all work in their own way
to help our community be the best it can be.
