Leadership Youth Program

The Chamber partners with four area high schools to host a leadership skills and community learning program called Leadership Youth. Twenty-five promising students are selected each year to participate in a one-day-per-month opportunity to visit every area of community life, hear business leaders from a variety of backgrounds, and get some “hands on” skills in leadership, team building, writing and public speaking. Each day focuses on a different subject, ranging from politics, education, justice, small business and volunteerism.

At the conclusion of the school year, the students have a “working day” where, as a group, they give back to the community by completing a visible volunteer project.

On Oct 2 most of the Leadership Youth team met at the Woodburn High School library to learn more about what we were getting ourselves into. But on Oct. 16, Leadership was brought to life.

The day went smoothly and as planned, with yummy food, great speakers and positive attitudes, an opportunity to play with toliet paper (right Dimitry?) and team building exercises that even had the staff wanting to join. "Next time it won't be all speakers, but we'll be ready to go on field trips," commented Rhonda Judson.

Not that I minded the speakers at all. The speakers came from different busineses and different backgrounds, but with one main purpose. "The function of Leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers," a Ralph Nader quote, one of the speakers used.

I certainly enjoyed Sharon Gray's activity, and I'm sure everyone learned something about themselves through her insight. Now I know how I contribute to a group of different types of Leaders. I am already looking forward to the next gathering and I am positive my fellow students are as well. I want to thank the Chamber of Commerce for everything they have done to create this program and for all of their future results.
