Our Community

Woodburn’s small-town values, agricultural traditions and a vision of economic prosperity for all is the foundation of our community. Vibrant schools, a full-service library, an aquatic center and world-class shopping provided by the Woodburn Company Stores enhance our quality of life. Tree-lined streets, historic downtown, the Oregon Golf Association Members Course at Tukwila, and the nearby Oregon Garden — a showcase of world-class display and botanical gardens — provide a beautiful backdrop for making a home, raising a family and making a good living among neighbors and friends.

City of Unity

A distinct blend of people and cultures helps make Woodburn special. The City of Unity traces its roots to those seeking opportunity and a better way of life. Some followed the Oregon Trail as pioneers, some followed the crops and came for harvest, some were drawn to rich land, farming traditions and religious freedom. Woodburn celebrates diversity and shares cultural heritages. Pride in diversity is evident in the schools, where children can enroll in Russian language classes as early as kinder- garten; in downtown where Mexican import shops, bakeries and restaurants thrive; and in the community, which provides opportunities for senior citizens to share their time and talents.

Agriculture

Woodburn is located at the heart of the Willamette Valley in Marion County. Its commercially grown tulips, iris, grass seed, and poppies provide a feast for the eyes. A whole different kind of feast is provided by its berries — including the Marionberry, hops for beer, grapes for wine, hazelnuts and orchards of apples, cherries and peaches. The countryside has many Christmas tree farms and large wholesale nurseries that stock garden centers nationwide. We are also home to 18 retail nurseries. Two of Oregon’s leading agriculture service companies, Woodburn Fertilizer/Wilbur Ellis and Wilco Farmers call the Woodburn area home.

Manufacturing

Woodburn welcomes industry. Specialty Polymers manufactures water-based emulsion polymers, including paint, adhesives and paper coatings. Universal Forest Products fabricates roof trusses for manufactured housing along with a variety of other pre-fabricated wood products. Fleetwood Homes of Oregon builds manufactured homes. Th e Ulven Companies forges specialty equipment for logging, utilities, fishing, mining and other industries. Truss-T Structures manufactures pre-engineered metal buildings. Patrick Industries manufactures a wide array of assemblies for the RV and camp trailer manufacturing industry. GEM Equipment Company manufactures equipment for the food processing industry world-wide.

Distribution

Many manufacturers and retailers have taken advantage of Woodburn’s location along Interstate 5 for their warehouse distribution centers. Food Services of America is one of America’s largest distributors of food and beverage products for the restaurant industry. Winco Foods, a warehouse distribution center serving Winco grocery stores throughout the region, is among our largest employers. Do It Best Corp. supplies HWI hardware franchises from its regional distribution facility here.

Housing

Buying a home in Woodburn is affordable. The average sale price of a new or used home is $154,493. Woodburn has more than 6,800 housing units. About 30 percent are rental homes and apartments. Several upscale communities have taken root, including the Tukwila golf course community, a multi-phase development of well-appointed single family and condominium units surrounding the OGA Members Course at Tukwila. Many other single family developments are under construction, with prices ranging from affordable to moderate.

Woodburn Senior Estates Golf and Country Club, a housing development for adults age 55 and older, promotes an active retirement, with well-maintained, easy-to-care-for home close to shopping and services. Many retirement apartment, condominiums and retirement communities are located nearby.

Faith

More than 35 churches representing many different denominations are in our immediate area, with more than 25 of those with the Woodburn city limits. A list wit contact information can be found in our services directory under “Churches.”

Members of the Russian Old Orthodox community fled religious persecution in Russia at the turn of the last century. By the mid-20th Century many members of the faith settled in Woodburn.

They continue to honor their heritage by wearing traditional handmade garments, and celebrating Russian holidays and observing feast days throughout the year. Their churches reflect the beautiful designs of the old country. Hand-painted murals, onion shaped domes an domes make the churches architecturally interesting.

To view Woodburn’s Russian churches, take Highway 99E south from Woodburn 2 miles to Howell-Praire Road NE. Turn left (east) and travel 1/4 mile to Monitor-McKee Road. Turn left and travel 1/2 mile to Bethlehem Drive NE. The churches are all located in the area.
